What is Granite?
Granite is one of the hardest materials know to man, so Granite can only be cut and polished using diamond tipped
machines. Granite is a totally natural igneous stone, containing a high
amount of quartz, which has cooled from a molten state inside the earth
over a long period of time and under immense pressure. Geologists define
granite as a plutonic rock made up of coloured feldspar, white quartz and
ferromagnesian minerals (Amphiboles, Pyroxenes and Olivines). These
minerals vary in their composition and hardness and cause granite to have
an amazing colour range.
Our granite worktops have a unique pattern that was produced when it
cooled tens of thousands, if not millions of years ago. Granite has only
recently been used for kitchen granite worktops, but craftsmen have used
it for thousands of years in the building of palaces, statues, churches,
monuments and stately homes. Granite provides an exclusive, elegant and
enduring material in a variety of colours and textures. Polished granite
has immense strength and durability making it an excellent choice for
granite worktops and other surfaces around the home and in the garden.
What is Marble?
Marble is a natural metamorphic rock produced by the volcanic melting of a
limestone deposit that previously existed as a sedimentary rock. Marble is
essentially calcium carbonate (calcite), but may contain magnesium with
various impurities. Marble also possesses versatile and attractive
qualities. Marble is not as hard wearing as granite and can be stained and
eroded in the open by rain and wind and more easily mechanically scored
and damaged by carelessness. Marble is also softer in appearance than
granite and is often more pleasing to the eye and to the touch. Marble is
chosen more often than granite for protected environments such as
bathrooms, pools and sunrooms. Whereas granite gives a kitchen the
appearance of strength, coolness and durability. It has a presence of its
own.
